Electronic Medical Record Financial Incentives: HITECH Act. American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, ARRA

President Barack Obama sign the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).  If you already have an electronic medical records system to chart patient encounters and prescribe electronically, the HITECH Act should provide you with incentives automatically beginning in 2011.

Starting in 2011, physicians who show that they are “meaningfully” using health IT would be eligible for $40,000 to $65,000. The incentives would be phased out over time, with penalties in place by 2016. However more and more provider groups will consider the adoption and implementation of an EMR. The U.S. healthcare information technology industry spent $28 billion annually. This figure could triple by 2019.
